A Visit to the Athens Meat Market

We were surprised when we found a reference to the Athens Central Market in our tourist guidebook. It mentioned a visit to the "surreal meat market." I was more surprised when I noticed that it was right down the street from where we were staying, the Athens Center Square Hotel.

The building occupies a full city block.

There are entrances on all four sides and, walking by, you immediately notice a line of butchers hard at work.

We walked through and I counted 52 butchers in one of the four passageways. Those were just the ones standing in the hallway. There were more behind the counter and in back rooms.

You can find every specialty you might want from liver to halal.

And, of course, there is a separate room for fish!

The fish seemed particularly fresh. And there was variety here, too. On the right you will find some octopus.

During the day, you might even find a little bit of entertainment while you shop.

At night, you can still walk through, but all is quiet.
