We concluded our tour of Islamic Cairo yesterday at the Citadel. As we stood near the Muhammad Ali Mosque in the afternoon, a jetliner cruised past, heading for Cairo International Airport. See the upper right corner of this picture.
I couldn't help but recall the beginning of the 1935 movie, Charlie Chan in Egypt. Charlie is flying into Cairo in an open-cockpit biplane and looks down to see the Muhammad Ali Mosque surrounded by scaffolding and undergoing reconstruction.
Some lucky passengers on the right side of the plane were doubtless recreating that scene - unless their airline was enforcing some crazy anti-photo policy as this one recently did.
