After Leadville, we had only one more critical stop to make before heading straight home. We diverted from I-80 down to Castle Rock, CO, to visit our long-time "cabin neighbors" in Wisconsin, Tom and Barb DeHeer. After lunch and a short visit we hit the road.
We made it as far as North Platte, Nebraska, before dinner which turned out to be wonderful at Penny's Diner - highly recommended.
As in all of the states west of Minnesota, masks seemed very scarce. Smoke from western forest fires kept the sun aglow as we headed east.
We will need to come back to Nebraska to explore more of the history of the Oregon Trail and western migration routes sometime in the future. That thought occurred to me a couple of times between North Platte and the Great Platte River Road Archway at Kearney.
The sculptures marking the entrance to Iowa at Council Bluffs meant we were almost home.
Three weeks later, we saw the first snowfall of the season on our back porch. It was quickly time to celebrate Terry's birthday back in "masky Minnesota".
