Catching Up On The Travel Blog - Sheridan, in Northern Wyoming

As long as we are catching up on previous years' trips that somehow didn't make it into the blog, I would be remiss not to include mention of King's Saddlery shop in Sheridan.

Sheridan is about 350 miles due north of the Wyoming highway we were on in 2020.  We passed through Sheridan on  a previous trip in September of 2019.  (we just love those autumn drives!)  On that trip we had headed east from Bozeman, Montana, and elected to take the "southern route" along I-90 back to Minneapolis instead of I-94.

Four hours travel from Bozeman brought us into Wyoming and to the Sheridan rest and information stop.

I asked the lady at the rest-stop counter what we might find of interest in Sheridan, and she replied, "Oh, the statues and the King Saddle Store."  Linda was intrigued, especially with the saddle museum. Tom was very skeptical about the saddles but relented just to please his lovely wife.

There was no mention of the steam locomotive at the edge of town, but that made the excursions worthwhile on its own.

With a population of about 18,000 Sheridan is a good sized town.  It has an interesting history worth reading about on the sign at the information center or in more detail at the Wikipedia entry

We paused at a couple of the statues and murals before heading over to the saddle shop.  King's Saddlery and Ropes is a modern tack store where one can order a custom saddle made right there.  Attached to it ism a wonderful western museum filled with saddles, spurs, and memorabilia of all manner.

The majority of the museum is found by following signs that take the visitor out the back door, across the alley and into another building.  Obviously, the King collection expanded beyond original intentions.  Plan on spending at least an hour as you will find movie star saddles, historic figure saddles and just plain surprises.

This is a definite must-see for any traveler's next trip through Wyoming (even those who are 100% positive they will be bored silly).
