Continuing beyond Baggs, Wyoming, we arrived at the Colorado border and were welcomed by signs informing us of the delights of Moffat County, including the Museum of Northwestern Colorado at nearby Craig. Unfortunately, it was past closing time when we pulled into Craig so we will have to return there on another trip.
This section of Colorado has more of the fall color that we recalled so well from previous trips. There is still a bit of coal mining taking place in the area although mining towns are much smaller now than in previous days. This is a very scenic drive all the way down to Leadville.
We had planned on taking a trip to Peru at this time in 2020 but as the Covid
pandemic enveloped the world, that kind of travel disappeared and our airline
reservations became indefinitely postponed. So instead of heading to
historic Machu Picchu, high in the Andes mountains at an elevation of 7,900
feet, we found ourselves in historic Leadville, Colorado, at almost 11,000
feet.
