We had driven the Pennsylvania Turnpike on a previous trip to the east coast but didn't notice the sign for the Flight 93 Memorial until we were well past the turn. We made sure we wouldn't miss it this time. It is an interesting drive along a loop of old U.S. 30 that leads to the Flight 93 Memorial.
We were particularly interested in seeing any references to Tom Burnett, a Bloomington MN resident with a role in the defensive strike against the hijackers. Our local Bloomington Post Office is now named for him.
We crossed the narrow arm of West Virginia (it is only about twenty miles across at this point) and made a quick stop at Washington, Pennsylvania, to photograph the county courthouse before heading off to the Memorial site.
There were more visitors than I expected at the Memorial, perhaps a thousand. Each of the 43 crash victims has a separate panel. The overall story of September 11 is well-presented.
Back on U.S. 30, it was easy to imagine the slow progress of travelers on this first transcontinental road, then known as The Lincoln Highway in the 1920s and 30s.
There are numerous historic reminder signs throughout Pennsylvania and we spent a bit of time at an old log church and cemetery before rejoining the Interstate.
There are numerous additional pictures at our Flickr photo album.
