Autumn in the northland provides moderation in temperatures and beautiful leaf color.
It had been a year of extremes as recorded on the cabin thermometer - and, yes, that minus 38 is a real temperature, not just some "feels like" fiction.
Viewing the fall color took us, one day, to Telemark Lodge north of Hayward and site of a couple of memorable "off-site" conferences for the Pillsbury Information Technology brigade. (Thoughts of Herman Cain singing "Misty" in the lounge drift through my memory.)
What a shock to see that there is no Telemark Lodge - just some concrete pillars that resemble a northwoods Stonehenge! (local news story here.)
We completed our leaf tour on a second day, taking in both Amnicon Falls Park and Pattison Falls Park. These two waterfalls are comfortably close together near Superior.
At Pattison Falls, bright blue blazes along the walking trail invite one to take a longer hike on the North Country Scenic Trail to either North Dakota or New York. Bring a warm coat if you do this in November!.
