Every once in awhile we like to order dinner to be delivered. When we order a kilo of shish tawook (grilled boneless chicken pieces) from our favorite chicken restaurant they include nearly enough bread to feed an entire village. Egyptians eat a lot of bread.
The bread is tasty but we cannot eat more than one round apiece. It's made without preservatives so it doesn't last more than a couple days. We hate to see such good bread wasted so I decided to make the remaining rounds into what we would call "pita chips".
Each round was cut into 24 triangles, bagged and frozen.
They make an excellent "pita chip" when microwaved for one minute, fifteen seconds. When paired with freshly made tahina, they're great for a snack or lunch.
We recently ran out of prepared pita chips so we had to buy some bread to make more. Most often the bread is sold on the side of the street in packages of 20 rounds and costs just 10 EGP or $.65. (subsidized bread from government bakeries costs just one-tenth of that) That's 20 rounds times 24 chips each. I don't even have to do the math to know that we now have enough to last until July.
